My name is Wookie
I was starving, and neglected.
I am from the Barrie chow saga of neglected chows.

I was one of the first ones to be branded a "killer".

I have very severe entropian all my  life. The people who owned me should have had that repaired. They didn't, now I have lesions on my eyes that will affect my vision forever.  My eyes hurt, I'm hungry, I've lived Hell for quite a long time. The people I trusted let me starve. I'm angry, I'm not socialized. I have so many good qualities to give the world if only they'd understand how scared I am.

Guess what? I flunked the shelter test big time - it sealed my fate.

BUT LOOK AT ME NOW!  My medical needs have all been met, and I'm going to school to be a Therapy Dog. Squeeeeeeeeeee.   I want to schnuggle up with the entire world. My eyes are fixed, I'm well fed, I travel all over the nation to greet people, I'm loved and I'm so, so happy. I get to do all kinds of fantastic things that other chows can only dream of. I even have my own little pet dog to walk around with and I have a wonderful mentor chow who's teaching me all kinds of nifty things. I didn't know that life could ever be this good. I didn't know that humans could ever be so nice to me.

Merlin's Hope would like to thank the wonderful staff at the Barrie Ontario SPCA  for listening to our plea , trusting us and allowing us to take possession of these chows and re-homing them into new and wonderful situations. Many shelters would not have done that. Many shelters would have sought euthanisia as a viable solution.

Generalized shelter tests often don't favour several particular breeds,  especially to those individuals who have been displaced from their environment, starved or neglected, beaten or abused.  These particular breeds suffer profound mental trauma that require a more enlightened understanding and patience. Once given the opportunity however, the resilliance shines through and they profit tremendously and go on to new lives in new homes.

Please DOWNLOAD and READ OUR POSTER. It's all about dogs just like me. Please support your local breed specific rescues. They remove a tremendous burden from the shelter system that should never go un-recognized.

Please join our campaign by encourageing breed specific dog rescues to constantly stay in touch with their local shelters, pounds and veterinarians.
